2-11-2019 Poll: 75% of Americans Oppose Outlawing Boycotts of Israel SomeFighting Back Over Freedom of Speech- Grant Smith Antiwar.com

https://original.antiwar.com/smith-grant/2019/02/11/poll-75-of-americans-oppose-outlawing-boycotts-of-israel/   New legislation passed in the Senate seeks to legalize the right of individual state governments to force American companies to certify they won't engage in economic boycotts of Israel as a condition for receiving government contracts. The "Combating BDS Act of 2019" is embedded as Title IV within the ''Strengthening America's Security in the Middle East Act of 2019'' (S.1). If signed into law, S.1 would allow states to withhold government funding from entities unwilling to certify they will not boycott Israel. Most existing state anti-BDS measures require pledge forms that contractors must sign as a condition for winning or renewing contracts.   But only 22.5% of American adults favor anti-boycott measures. A new representative IRmep poll conducted through Google Surveys finds that 74.9% of Americans oppose forcing gove

2-19-2020 ‘We gave up on historic Palestine in exchange for nothing’ Bassem Tamimi, who has led popular protests in Nabi Saleh for more than a decade, says the two-state solution is 'no longer an option.' - Oren Ziv +972

https://www.972mag.com/bassem-tamimi-one-state/   …"Why did [his 16 year old daughter] Ahed slap that soldier?" Tamimi asks rhetorically, in a meeting with journalists from Israel. "Because I didn't. That's the reality: We need new ideas, and we cannot expect different results if we continue on the same path. We need to be focused on a goal and change our methods accordingly, not the other way round.   "We don't want to live in an illusion," Tamimi continues. "The peace process began in Madrid in 1992, but the 'Deal of the Century' finished that process off. But the current situation is better than what they're proposing [in Trump's plan], which offers no right of return and no territorial contiguity — just population transfer, and total control for Israel."… T amimi, a longtime Fatah member, now believes that a one-state solution is the only way. &

2-18-2020 The Rise and Fall of The Israel Project – Alex Kane Jewish Currents

Until recently, support for Israel from both political parties was considered ironclad. But the Democratic Party is beginning to change, and its presidential frontrunner, Bernie Sanders, wants to condition US military aid on Israel respecting Palestinian human rights.   To stem this trend, groups like the newly formed Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) are trying to frame support for Israel as a natural part of a progressive agenda. But the downfall of The Israel Project (TIP), a once-influential pro-Israel group that counted prominent Democrats as top supporters, offers a sobering lesson for groups like DMFI. Once dubbed "Israel's most effective media advocacy organization" by TIME magazine, TIP closed its doors last August after its funding dried up, with Democratic donors fl

2-14-2020 Israel’sNetanyahu boasts of having Destroyed US 1st Amendment and Free Speech – Juan Cole Informed Comment

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=isralicommiteehousedemolintion Israeli caretaker prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has been indicted for corruption and is facing an election soon, just boasted that his ministry of strategic affairs has managed to undermine first amendment protections for free speech in the United States by lobbying state legislatures to pass laws forbidding the boycott of Israel. Anti-boycott laws of the Old South were used against Martin Luther King, Jr. and other activists in the Civil Rights movement to keep African-Americans subordinate and segregated. The right to boycott establishments over civil rights was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1982 in NAACP v. Claiborne Hardware…When Kansas fired Mennonite school teacher Esther Koontz from a program to train other teachers over her refusal to certify that she doesn't boycott Israel (she does), the ACLU took the case to court and a Federal judge struck down the Kansas statute. The sta

2-14-2020 Klobuchar Has Pushed Extreme Right-Wing Policy on Israel/Palestine – Stephen Zunes Truthout

https://truthout.org/articles/klobuchar-has-pushed-extreme-right-wing-policy-on-israel-palestine/ In recent days, much of the mainstream media has been focusing on the rise of centrist Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar as a serious contender in the Democratic presidential primary. Many in the more progressive wing of the party have been criticizing her positions on climate change and broader environmental concerns , as well as her stances on economic inequality, social welfare and the criminal legal system. However, attention also needs to be brought to her surprisingly right-wing foreign policy perspectives.  First and foremost are her rather frightening positions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially their implications for civil liberties. It's unfortunately not unusual for Democrats — even those on the more liberal end of the spectrum — to take positions toward the Palestinians that would place these office-holders on what would be

2-4-2020 Mother Nature Scoffs at Trump’s Mideast Peace Plan - Thomas L. Friedman New York Times

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/04/opinion/middle-east-climate-change.html Climate change and other conditions don't respect boundary lines [An environmental report on Israel/Palestine]… The mountain aquifer running down the spine of the West Bank and Israel is also being rapidly depleted and polluted. The Jewish settlers in the West Bank are connected to the Israeli water system through a sophisticated network that runs 24/7, but the Palestinian cities are not. So, in hot summer months in Bethlehem, for instance, residents get municipal water only episodically.   You also have many West Bank Palestinian villages and towns without sewage treatment facilities. Their raw sewage is tossed into cesspits — unlined holes in the ground — that let the liquid seep into the groundwater and the solids collect, to then be dumped into wadis. Sewage in the greater Hebron area, with over 300,000 people, flows via the Hebron Stream to the Israeli town of Beersheba, where it becomes

2-2-2020 Thousands of Palestinian citizens protest Trump’s ‘transfer plan’ - Meron Rapoport, Oren Ziv +972

https://www.972mag.com/palestinian-citizens-protest-transfer-plan/ Palestinian citizens of Israel protested in Baqa al-Gharbiyye against Trump's proposal to redraw Israel's boundaries, which could strip citizenship from over 200,000 people.   The protest, organized by the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and the Baqa al-Gharbiyye municipality, came days after the release of Trump's plan, which included a clause that proposes redrawing Israel's borders so that cities, towns, and villages in the Triangle — home to over 200,000 Palestinian citizens of Israel — would no longer be part of Israel…     Posted by Judith Ferster, AIME member
