Top Israeli politicians and security officials are urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the aid package offered by the United States and not take the needless risk of holding out for more. …

Over the past decade, the US aid package to Israel amounted to $3.1 billion per year. In addition to this aid, Israel has appealed to Congress every year, requesting and receiving a special, targeted addition to the package to develop and supply its missile-defense programs. This additional aid amounted to some $500 million per year. Now the Americans are demanding that this funding be included in the basic aid budget. They want Israel to agree that it will no longer approach Congress separately for aid and not ask for any supplements to the aid package. The last argument concerns the amount of the aid money. Israel is asking for $40-50 billion over 10 years, while the United States is prepared to give it about $37 billion. Israel says that $37 billion is virtually the same amount it's been receiving, so that there is no upgrade, and that the sum ignores the declining purchasing power of the dollar this decade…
